Preventing Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common infection that can affect a wide range of individuals. This fungal infection is caused by ringworm, and it can be spread by walking barefoot on highly trafficked public surfaces like pool sides. It is important to note that the fungus causing ringworm thrives in environments that are both warm and moist which is why athlete’s foot is often developed after walking barefoot in public locker rooms. There are several steps you can take to avoid developing athlete’s foot. First, you might consider wearing socks, shoes, or slippers when walking around the house. If a member of your household has athlete’s foot, the infection can be spread to others through bath mats, floors, and other surfaces. Second, it might be wise to wash and disinfect items that make frequent contact with the feet. Namely, you could diligently wash any towels, socks, or sheets that encountered another person’s bare feet. If you believe that you have athlete’s foot or want to learn more about methods of prevention, contact a podiatrist.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Eugene Little, DPM from Foot and Ankle Centers of Ohio.  Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Typical Pregnancy Foot Problems

Although it might not seem immediately intuitive to some pregnant women, pregnancy can seriously impact and affect the feet. While a baby grows inside a pregnant woman, the woman’s center of gravity changes, forcing the feet to adapt. Additionally, during pregnancy, the woman produces a variety of pregnancy hormones that can have significant effects on the feet. One typical problem that you might encounter during your pregnancy is flat feet. Flat feet occur when the feet lose their natural arch and the entire foot presses directly against the ground when standing. Pregnant women can sometimes develop flat feet because as they gain a notable amount of weight, they exert more and more pressure on the feet, which can reduce the arch in the feet. Secondly, another common pregnancy foot problem is swelling in the feet. Swollen feet can frequently occur in pregnant women because, throughout the pregnancy, the pregnant woman’s body must produce a significantly larger amount of blood to support the growing baby. This excess of blood and fluids might sometimes lead to swelling in the feet. As a result, you might notice your foot size increasing, causing your feet to temporarily require larger shoes. If you are pregnant, it might be a good idea to reach out to your podiatrist who can help you manage symptoms on your feet.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Eugene Little, DPM from Foot and Ankle Centers of Ohio. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

What Is a Heel Spur?

A heel spur is a growth of bone that forms from extra calcium deposits on the foot and that stretch from the heel bone to the foot arch. It is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Heel spurs are a quarter of an inch in length or smaller, though they may become larger in some cases. They cannot be seen from outside of the body but can become quite painful, especially when jumping, running, or walking. There may be swelling of the heel and ankle with heel spurs. Some of the primary causes of heel spurs are ill fitting or non-supportive footwear, wearing high heels, bruising under the heel bone, poor posture or other physical structural issues (such as flat feet or high arches), or being overweight or obese. Other possible causes are having a pre-existing medical condition, like diabetes or arthritis, over-training, repetitive hard impact or pressure on the heel, and aging with calcium leaving the bones and settling into the bloodstream and attaching to the surface of bones. Women are more prone to developing heel spurs than men because their hips are naturally wider in comparison to their knees which causes additional pressure to be placed on the heel with movement. Routine foot care and exercises to reduce ligament stress and relieve bone tension will help invigorate heel tissues, but sometimes surgery will be required to remove a heel spur. If you have a heel spur and it is causing pain and interfering with your functioning, consult with a podiatrist who can recommend the best course of treatment.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Eugene Little, DPM from Foot and Ankle Centers of Ohio. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

Heel Pain Can Be Treated!

Do you suffer from heel pain when you get up in the morning? If so, you should seek the professional help of your podiatrist and have a proper diagnosis performed. Heel pain can be caused by several different foot-related conditions.

A small percentage of people who have plantar fasciitis experience little or no positive response to ordinary treatment. An option to consider may be to have Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) performed. This can be a successful treatment for this type of foot condition. Shockwave therapy is administered by targeting shock waves into the damaged tissue surrounding the plantar fascia. This procedure generally takes about 20 minutes and anesthesia is typically not needed if the treatment is low impact. Conversely, with high-intensity treatment, general anesthesia may be needed as a result of the pain that may be felt. Patients have experienced little or no downtime after the session, however, several treatments may be needed for permanent relief. Possible side effects may include swelling, redness, and slight bruising at the treatment site. If you suffer from heel pain, please consult with a podiatrist who can determine if shockwave therapy is right for you.

Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used to treat various injuries and conditions, particularly plantar fasciitis in the feet. To learn more, consult with Eugene Little, DPM from Foot and Ankle Centers of Ohio. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a new treatment option designed to treat bone conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and others. Shockwave therapy uses high intensity sound waves that are directed to the affected tissues of the body with pinpoint accuracy. The effects are very beneficial, leading to a production of collagen fibers, eliminating inflammation.

Who Benefits from Shockwave?

Shockwave is recommended for patients suffering from heel pain and associated problems. Heel pain is a common condition which can be caused by obesity, overexertion, and spending a substantial amount of time on hard floors with your feet exposed and unsupported.

Fast and Easy

The therapy is actually a simple process that can leave patients feeling better the very next day. Shockwave therapy is not as dramatic as it sounds. It enables more blood flow to effected areas, addressing the source of the problem and allowing treatment to last for a long time.

Treatment & Recovery Time

Shockwave treatment will enable your feet to recover quickly. This is especially important since surgery is not required. It is cost effective and does not require the use of anesthesia. This treatment is a better option to surgery, since it is proven safe.

Shoes, Socks, and Blisters

A blister on the foot often develops as a result of excess friction that can come from wearing shoes and socks that do not fit correctly. It is defined as a small area that resembles a bubble and is filled with a serum that contains antibodies. When a blister forms, it is the body’s natural defense technique in protecting the raw skin, and will gradually drain as new skin develops. Additional reasons a blister may form can include allergic reactions to an insect bite, or existing medical conditions that can consist of eczema and psoriasis. Many people have abnormal foot shapes which may affect the fit of the shoe, possibly leading to a blister forming. Patients who have peripheral neuropathy or diabetes may be unaware of a rubbing sensation on their feet as a result of the inability to feel pain. It is important to refrain from popping the blister, which may result in infection and damage to the raw skin underneath it. If you have a blister on your foot, please consult with a podiatrist who can help you to properly manage it, and guide you toward preventing future blisters from developing.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Eugene Little, DPM of Foot and Ankle Centers of Ohio. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.
